What’s the perfect way to enjoy Valentine’s Day in Woodstock? Gather your date and join us for the debut performance by Garrison, Johnston and Schulich — a dynamic trio of world-renowned musicians with roots in Woodstock!
After years of honing their craft and building successful careers, artists Matthew Garrison, Aaron Johnston, and Sean Schulich returned to Woodstock and formed a spirited jazz trio whose improvisational explorations draw from jazz, classical, funk, Latin, world-beat, electronica and beyond.
After the death of his father Jimmy Garrison (John Coltrane’s bassist), Matthew Garrison‘s family relocated to Rome, Italy. He returned to the United States in 1988 and lived for two years in Woodstock, NY, where he studied intensively with both Jack DeJohnette and bassist Dave Holland. Matthew received a full scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music and began his professional career with the likes of Gary Burton, Bob Moses, Betty Carter, Mike Gibbs and Lyle Mays to mention a few.
Matthew moved to Brooklyn, NY, in 1994 and has performed, toured and recorded with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Meshell Ndegeocello, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Cassandra Wilson, Scott Henderson, The Gil Evans Orchestra, Tito Puente, The Saturday Night Live Band, Pat Metheny and many others. In 2012 Matthew founded ShapeShifter Lab, which is quickly becoming one of the most important and influential music venues in New York.
While he may be best-known as the polyrhythmic heartbeat and producer of the Grammy-nominated band Brazilian Girls, Aaron Johnston is more than just a “remarkably fluid drummer,” as the New York Times has dubbed him. A Verve recording artist, writer, producer, arranger, programmer, vocalist, and engineer of the highest caliber, his diverse skills have made him one of Latin and American music’s most sought after collaborators.
Aaron’s performed with the likes of David Byrne, David Grisman, Suzanne Vega, Harry Belafonte, Bill Laswel, Tony Scherr, Bela Fleck and Dawn Landes. His current projects are Snakes and Stars with Michael Travis from the band String Cheese Incident, and Aaron is still making music with his band Brazilian Girls.
Sean Schulich hails from Woodstock, NY, and after earning his Masters from Yale, he won Artists International, selling out his debut at Carnegie’s Weill Hall. Being a multi-genre musician, he then went on to co-found the fusion group Alpha Mosaic, winning a Sony Jazz Competition. Sean’s playing is described as “audacious” and “staggering” by jazzreview.com.
Sean Schulich has performed with the Funky Meters, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the New Orleans Suspects, Bernie Worrell, Charles Neville, Meshell Ndegeocello, Zigaboo Modeliste and recorded with Haitian House music-icon Jephte Guillaume. His recent projects include Sunlight Origami (with Woodstock icon Vinnie Martucci) and Silver Goat, a high-powered improv trio in NYC. He’s played Jazz Fest in New Orleans, The Mint in LA, the Kennedy Center in DC and BB King’s, BAM, Brooklyn Bowl, Bowery Ballroom and the Blue Note in NYC.
